Translation: yes it exists!

It really does

Duff beer: not just on the simpsons

Should we go to Menizales or Medellin?

Reasons to go to Menizales

1: this delicious and very filling lunch

2: delicious Juan Valdez coffee bought for us by 2 Columbians with perfect English

3: beauty queens and marching bands on parade

(Not the weather.. Waiting in the rain for hours for the beauty queens to arrive and get the parade started)

4: this crazy club that we went to with the Colombians who we met on the street and had random reggeton singers show up and party till the early morning

5 hours on a bus later, we are in Medellin, happy to have made a stop in Manizales for what they call "the biggest festival in the Americas" (might be a bit of a stretch, although I now have serious respect for glockenspiel players)

Palms in the mist

The day started out with a touch of blue in the sky with amazing palms towering above.

Also, cows were about...

2.5 hour hikr later---Hummingbirds!!!

1 hour later... No more blue sky

Cloud forest=clouds in the forest.

Forest of crazy tall palms next to cows quietly grazing as we walked down in the rain. In my Maid of the Mist poncho and waterproof hiking shoes that I have grown to appreciate, and thank my mother for "encouraging" me to get the day before I left.

Into the earth

We took a 4 hour bus trip on terrible roads to get to Tierradentro. (Tierra = earth/dirt adentro = ahead/inside)

It was worth it. The next day we hiked uphill for 2 hours and got the above view. Also worth it.

Doesn't look like much...

But it is! There are hundreds of these caves in the surrounding area and they have floor to ceiling paintings in red and black.

Also,amazing statues.

Monkey!

Sort of near by (but not really because mountains make everything far away) is a huge collection of these guys.

They have a pretty sweet view from here.

We went into maybe 25 different caves. Originally I believe they were under houses and contained urns with the bones of dead family members.

Down into the dark... A little creepy.

But always worth it. Look at that face!

Feliz ano nuevo

Columbia (and parts of Ecuador) has a tradition of burning dummies filled with straw and pockets filled with written regrets from the year before.

In the background you can see a "widow" aka man in drag asking for money.

Said dummy, pockets filled with regrets

Said dummy after I asked to draw on angry eyebrows which started a massive trend of drawing lots of things on him. He is also loaded with gunpowder.

And here he is aflame. Goodbye regrets of 2011.

And in case you were wondering, $3 champagne tastes like $3 champagne. Don't let Myrie's smile fool you.
