Meet me in the middle

Half in the Northern hemisphere and half in the South

Equator!!!!!

Location:Equator!!!!

Between the thorns

One third of the roses grown in Ecuador are exported to the USA, for valentine's day alone.

There are movements in the flower community to support sustainable, Eco friendly, equitable farms but a large number are not-- employing 1000s of Ecuadorians in less than ideal conditions.

All I want for Christmas...

Is a 27kilo bag of animal crackers.

We kept seeing HUGE bags of animal crackers in the grocery stores and couldn't figure it out.

Who eats that many? Don't they get stale before you could possibly finish the bag? What are we missing?

Some quick google work resulted in the answer-- it's some sort of tradition in Ecuador for kids to get animal crackers for Christmas. Like stockings, but budget and there are camels!

The sights

We signed up for a bike ride to see the volcano near Banos.

When Nathan closes his eyes, it's pretty much the same...

A moment of clarity! And then RAIN. We finally went downhill an it was muddy and rainy and just bad news.

After we went canyoning- fun but taxing after being jostled on a bike for 2+ hours.

Now Quito and only one more day till Nathan goes back... Laden with the goods of one of South Americas biggest markets (the plan for tomorrow)

El rio

Faced with a limited number of days left, we decided to up the excitement and go rafting. Nathan's first time, Myrie's second and my second. (my first being class 1? Super easy in Japan)

Suited up and 20 min of spanish only explanation later we were ready!

It was great-- class 3 and 4 rapids, some good slashes... No one fell out. We want more! Maybe canyoning tomorrow....

Into the jungle: day 2

First up: boat ride!

Our boat made of cinnamon wood.

Fairly fast moving waters... Not much to see... (I'm on a boat!)

Aside from this house, and it's 2 cows...

Jungle hike time!!

A walking palm-- it will actually move itself to get more sun, nutrients etc

Swim on through to get to an amazing hidden waterfall

Jungle- it's amazing! The hike was all through primary forest.
It was 2 1/2 hours in rubber boots, and Shaman our guide was wearing a camouflage vest... I actually lost him a few times.

One last look from the mirador (and some photos)

And then we went back into Puyo to catch the bus. Our guide -a really jolly, knowledgable, easy going guy, one of our best yet- even crammed us into his tiny hatchback with our giant backpacks and drove us to the bus station.

We fit, just barely.

Into the jungle: day 1

First YouTube "baby monkey riding backwards on a pig" that song = on repeat in our heads

Monkey rehab centre, where monkeys go after people are jerks to them. Myrie and I had a bad monkey experience in Indonesia- these were more used to people and thankfully not un the mean way.

"riding backwards on a pig babymonkey"

Big big fish

In a frenzy!

Waterfall, naturally

Boa!!!! It was also on me. Feels soooo creepy.

Also, this view is why I travel.

Those are Tarzan vines. Nathan and I slept in hammocks with this view. Not the most comfortable but it was amazing and put some distance between us and the eternally crowing roosters.
